What are the benefits and risks of investing in a mutual fund issued by an insurance company?

There have been a lot of issues in the news these days regarding the trustworthiness of insurance companies. Are these instruments regulated by the government? How are these funds different from those issued by banks? My aunt is trying to sell me these funds and I want to know the whole picture.

Im 16. i plan on being a big time investor some day soon. but the prob is, i know absolutely nothing about how the stock market works. well, the only thing i do know is that you pick a company you want to invest in, you give them money, and *somehow* you get back more than you paid. tell me how it all works. how to get into investing. maybe some site where i can practice investing and give me the answers im looking for.

How can I get started in real estate investing without much money?

I want to start with small rental properties, but all the money my wife and I make pretty much pays the bills and we don’t have much left over.
