Does buy and hold really work in investing in the stock market?

Look at the Nikkei 225, Japan’s version of our DOW. If you invested 24 years ago in the Nikkei, you’d have less now than you did then. That’s 24 years ago!! When you see that, why can’t that happen with the DOW or NASDAQ or S&P 500? What should a person do with their money they want to save and grow?

My idea of what this investment is, is exactly the opposite though. I thought the firm was using money to buy working capital (therefore becoming less liquid but more profitable) such as inventory or what else can this be?
