Where should I begin investing my money for later in life?

I am an independent contractor and get no benefits accept some sort of relationship with Smith and Barney? I have been told to invest in a roth IRA. Any other suggestions (with explanations)?
I am thinking in terms of what will be the best decision for 40-45 years away.
