Would investing retirement money now be a good move?

I know someone who is investing most of there retirement money now, and they’re about 52 with two teenaged kids. And they are splurging on the rest of it. I personally don’t think this is a very good idea, it might come to bite them in the **** later on, leaving them high and dry. Is this a good move to make, with the kind of economy we’re in? please give good and thorough answers.
